The Johannesburg Zoo has the country’s first ‘zoo poo’ biogas installation. The biogas digester uses manure to produce gas, which is then used for cooking at the zoo’s café. A 3.75 kW Solar PV system provides power to the visitor’s centre; the cheetah enclosure’s electric fence has been converted to a solar powered system; and a solar-powered golf cart provides a cleaner transport mode for staff. The estimated amount of carbon offset through these initiatives is around 12 tons per year.
